Screening of dogs for diabetes mellitus in Gwalior and Vidisha district of Madhya Pradesh.

The present study was conducted to screen the dogs for diabetes mellitus by estimating blood glucose, urine glucose, glycated hemoglobin and serum fructosamine. Glycated hemoglobin and serum fructosamine indicated as valuable biomarkers tool for diagnosis of diabetes in dogs. A total of 626 dogs were screened. Overall prevalence reported for subclinical/clinical diabetes was 2.71% and 0.798%, respectively. Age wise prevalence of subclinical diabetes was higher in the age group of 5-8 years (76.47%). Clinical diabetes was higher in the age group of more than 8 yrs (60%). Highest prevalence of diabetes was recorded in Labrador, followed by GSD. Prevalence of diabetes, recorded in female dogs was higher than the male dogs.
